Advantages and Innovations: The innovation aspect consists in simultaneous application of the electrochemical cleaning method and the ultrasound, which ensures decontamination process intensification. The unit’s advantages: - reducing the amount and the volume of the radioactive waste and, as an effect, decreasing its negative influence on the environment and the human organism, - returning the decontaminated materials (the metal) to the production cycle, - converting the radioactive waste into a safe storage form, - low consumption of the decontaminating solution – the electrolyte, - easy to operate.

Description of the offer: The use of nuclear reactors has generated a large amount of radioactive waste. Decontamination of radioactive waste (RAW) is a particularly pressing problem in atomic power engineering at the present time. The existing methods for decontamination of radioactive waste (chiefly electrochemical ones) are characterized by low running ability and low cleaning process productivity. Currently, the studies are aimed at solving the problems of improving the productivity, the decontamination quality and the running ability. A small enterprise from Vologda has developed a unit (an immersion trough), which is equipped with ultrasonic radiators and filled with a decontaminating solution. A unique ultrasonic intensification allows to speed up the decontamination process and, therefore, to treat more waste. The concentration of the hazardous decontaminating solutions is lowered and their usage is reduced at the same time. The combination of electrochemical treatment and ultrasonic radiation effects allows to cause intensive destruction and detachment of radioactive deposits until reaching the minimal significant activity level and the complete purification. The following unit operation parameters were set according to the results of ultrasonic technology tests during the decontamination of used reactor fuel assemblies: – initial β-impurity of samples – 500-16000 particles/(sq. cm×min); – β-impurity after decontamination – 16 particles/(sq. cm×min); – average decontamination coefficient – 850. Furthermore, the equipment can switch on a rinsing trough, a barbotage system, and a drying chamber. The enterprise manufactures equipment of any size, operating capacity and decontamination trough volume depending on the RAW’s kind and size. The device is used for solid radioactive waste decontamination by atomic power stations, space-rocket industry enterprises, the navy, and scientific research establishments. The equipment is applicable to fuel elements of all reactor types. The company is ready to develop and manufacture a custom-made unit for solid radioactive waste decontamination, to install the equipment and to service it, to provide instruction and advice on its operation for the personnel.
