Description of the offer: A Turkish researcher from a technical university in Istanbul, studying on energy technologies, is developing a project proposal for the FCH2 JU 2015 call. Having project experience in the fields of renewable energy resources and alternative energy production including fuel cell and hydrogen storage, the researcher is preparing the proposal for the "FCH.02.3-2015: Development of co-electrolysis to produce syngas using CO2 and water" topic. Water electrolysis has been used by various industry branches since the beginning of the previous century and has become the favored way of the hydrogen production. The specific topic of the FCH2 JU 2015 call demands a new electrolysis model to produce syngas by using carbon dioxide and water. The concept of solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysis is claimed to be technically advantageous for its potential use for co-electrolysis of both steam and CO2, producing syngas, from which hydrocarbons such as liquid fuels can be produced. As the nature of the cell units is degradative, some challenges have to be met in order to achieve core standards in production. Research within the field should be conducted towards the production of electrolytes that are chemically more stable, porous and gastight with high ionic and low electronic conductivity. Within this framework, the proposal of the Turkish researcher contests the current stability level of electrodes under highly oxidising conditions and proposes to render better electronic conduction and CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion): durations over 1000h and degradation rates lower than 1% efficiency. Measures will be developed against electrode poisoning and to stabilise erratic response of interconnecting surfaces to heavy oxidisation. The project offers innovative ways to explore dense and porous electrode manufacturing for large scale applications and effective thermal management. A complementing research of economical benefits of co-electrolysis for gas or liquid fuel synthesis will serve as a collateral scientific piece. The university is looking for partners who have expertise on and could contribute to the work packages related to the production of electrolyte, manufacturing or testing of cell and stack, syngas generation, thermal and cost analysis, and techno-economic research. SMEs, large companies, research institutions, and universities are welcome providing they have the requested expertise and experience in international or national projects.
