Description of the offer: In production and development, open source as a development model promotes a universal access via a free license to a product's design or blueprint, and universal redistribution of that design or blueprint, including subsequent improvements to it by anyone. Usually, "open source" refers to a computer program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design. Open-source code is meant to be a collaborative effort, where programmers improve upon the source code and share the changes within the community. It is a very successful development model in the computer community, which has raised many innovations. Open-source products respond faster to the technology advancements and changes of the market. Thus the open-source vehicles. This concept is not yet represented in the automobile market. Two main challenges for the open-source vehicles are their complicated quality management and its higher price compared to the mass-produced normal cars. To be able to compete with current manufacturers, the open-source vehicle has to be released for a niche market first. After advancements in the modular technology and development of the network between customers, developers and suppliers, the open-source vehicle can be launched for greater markets. The segment of “Light utility e-vehicles” is selected as the target group for this project. Within the scope of this project, a basic e-vehicle with modular powertrain and universal interfaces for utility modules will be developed. The requirements and properties of the universal interfaces will be published (open-access) to enable all companies to develop, build and sell own powertrain /utility modules. Moreover: - Some tests and certification processes will be developed to assure the compatibility of the modules to the whole system and provide adequate safety and quality for the modular and open-source vehicle. - A platform will be developed, on which all companies can produce and offer their products for the modular and open-source vehicle. - A network of customers, developers and suppliers will be created for R&D-activities on the open-source platform (basic e-vehicle, interfaces, test and certification processes, etc.). - A business model for a niche market will be investigated in the project, by which companies can produce and supply their products for the modular and open-source vehicle. Expected impact of the project: - The Open-source product responds faster to the technology advancements and changes of the market. - The Open-source concept raises innovation and results in new mobility concepts. - The Open-source model supports SMEs with their business. - The Open-source strategy supports research organizations. Management & Background: The German coordinator has broad experience with e-vehicles and modular concepts through several national and international projects. Some basic equipment and tools are already developed and can be used for this project. Dissemination & Exploitation of results: - A network of suppliers, developers and customers will be developed within the project. - It is planned to establish a startup after the project and to bring the project's results to the market. In this case, the involved partners could also contribute or supply their products to the market. The requested partners are companies specialized in manufacturing, testing, production of vehicle frames (chassis), montage and certification in order to contribute to the whole design and production chain, enriching the creation process of the new vehicles. The proposal will be submitted under the Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) programme of Horizon 2020. The FTI pilot aims to reduce the time from idea to market and to increase the participation in Horizon 2020 of industry, SMEs and first-time industry applicants. Deadline: 01.
