Description of the offer: Originating from the military and security area, the use of Ion Mobility Spectrometers (IMS) for analytical issues in the civil life, for example in the veterinary field, is becoming more and more a matter of interest. The detection limit of these devices is in the lower ppb- or in the ppt-range. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can be detected from breath or evaporations of the body surface, as well as in headspaces of biological specimens, i.e. bacterial culture plates, blood or milk samples, faeces, food samples, etc. The technical equipment used in these applications is small, portable, easy to use and robust. Therefore, this technique is appropriate for the use in veterinary practice, i.e. in stables, paddocks, riding rings as well as in the small laboratories, usually integrated in a veterinary surgery, or in small and medium size food producing companies. And the collection of gaseous samples from animals is non-invasive. The technology developed includes a breath sampling system for large animals as horses or cattle. It is possible to sample the alveolar breath separately from the exhaled air originated from the conducting airways. Due to the complex character of gaseous samples emitted by biological systems, the use of a gas chromatography column (GC) for the separation of analytes prior to detection by IMS is necessary. It is possible now to discriminate between a group of pregnant and non-pregnant mares via breath analysis by GC-IMS. Furthermore, significant relations between peak areas of selected clusters, representing volatile organic compounds, to levels of selected hormones (progesterone, estrone sulfate and equine chorionic gonadotropin) can be detected. However, further validation of this application in equine medicine is necessary to find specific biomarkers for using the technique as diagnostic tool to estimate best mating time or to detect pregnancy in large domestic animals. Work is in progress on a second application in equine medicine: detection of medication in living animals via breath analysis. Most pharmaceutical substances are not volatile at low temperatures, like body temperature. This is the reason for searching volatile biomarkers, which are regularly emitted in the patient after medication with specific substances. A further aspect is the change from gaseous to liquid samples. Besides investigation of headspaces of biological liquid samples, direct investigation of these liquids is a matter of interest. Development of a further application for use of IMS in the microbiological area: By analysing headspaces of bacterial cultures grown on standard blood agar plates, differentiation between bacteria species is possible. A heated sample chamber was constructed to standardise sampling procedure of the headspaces of bacterial cultures. At present, work is in progress to detect bacterial infections directly in the diseased animal. It would be time-saving in diagnostic process, if a portable GC-IMS is used under field conditions by the veterinarians directly in the stable. In cooperation with industrial partners process and quality control applications for high sensitive VOC detection can be jointly developed.
