Description of the offer: A Spanish research centre with large experience in developing novel solutions for food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors, has designed (among other) different technologies that help industry to better manage its residues. One of these technologies is based on advanced oxidation processes and can be used to treat wastewater. The food industry needs to treat wastewater resulting from their activity. In some cases, conventional treatments are not suitable due to the complexity of the water or the presence of specific contaminants such as pesticides. Therefore, with the ultimate goal of reusing or pouring the treated water, advanced techniques are necessary to ensure contaminants´ reduction and / or elimination. Emerging contaminants are given priority by the major organizations dedicated to protecting the public health and the environment; such as the World Health Organization, the Agency for Environmental Protection of the United States and the European Commission. Currently, a total of 45 substances or groups of substances are identified as priority and dangerous, its performance is a priority in the field of water policy. The emerging contaminants generated by the large amount of pesticide products, drugs (human and veterinary), chemicals industries, personal hygiene products, antiseptics, illegal drugs or gasoline additives that are deposited in the water causing harmful effects in the environment in the medium and long term. These substances are able to penetrate at all stages of the water cycle and are highly resistant to conventional cleaning methods. They may even be accumulated in aquatic animals and plants The research centre with extensive experience in the treatment of wastewater from the food industry has developed a wastewater treatment system based on advanced oxidation processes. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) involve the generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH-), which have greater oxidative potential than other traditional oxidants (ozone, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine ...). AOPs are physical -chemicals processes that can produce profound changes in the chemical structure of the contaminants. These processes can oxidize organic matter and can achieve refractory compounds degradation (those microorganisms that can not degrade themselves). The centre has defined the following steps to ensure the best result. After analyzing wastewater composition by chromatography, the oxidant used is determined. Results from conducting various experiments may show the necessity of combining with another technique (eg ultraviolet). Then, the necessary oxidant doses and exposure times are defined to guarantee an optimal process. The final concentrations of treated water are performed by chromatography. The application of advanced oxidation processes may be used to: • Reduction / elimination of persistent contaminants, refractory that are not treatable by conventional physic-chemical and biological processes (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, surfactants, etc.). • Increase the biodegradability of water to be treated by conventional biological processes. • Improve the quality of treated water: post-treatment of discharges treated for reuse. The application of advanced oxidation processes is presented as an effective solution for the treatment of treated water that requires a higher level of decontamination, in view of their possible reuse. The centre is interested in establishing commercial agreement with technical assistance with food companies that realize the necessity of reducing the contaminants in their wastewater fluxes. By means of the implementation of customized advanced oxidation processes into their facilities, food companies could solve their necessities. The centre also offers its development to wastewater treatment plants to improve their facilities.
